  • 01 EU membership
  • 02 Small classes
  • 03 300 days of sun

The honest take

What we tell our own families about Cyprus.

Why students love it

EU-recognised degrees taught in English
Warm, safe, Mediterranean life; small cities
Tuition €7,000–12,000, below most of Western Europe
Large Arab, Greek and international student communities
Easy transfer pathways to UK and EU universities

What to plan for

Small job market; most graduates move on for work
Public transport is limited; buses only
Summer heat from June to September
Post-study work options are still developing
Rents in Limassol have risen with the tech boom

Getting around

Leave the car at home.

Buses cover the cities and a student pass is cheap, but most students walk, cycle or share rides. Campuses are compact.

City buses

Student monthly passes in Nicosia, Limassol and Larnaca.

€20 / month student

Cycling & scooters

Flat cities, sunny weather; e-scooter rentals everywhere.

€15–30 / month

Intercity buses

Nicosia to Limassol or Larnaca in under an hour.

€4–7 per trip

Food & groceries

What a week of eating really costs.

Eating out is affordable and halal is easy to find. Lidl, Alphamega and local markets keep groceries modest; a souvlaki wrap is the €5 dinner.

Souvlaki pita

Grilled meat wrap, the student dinner.

Halloumi

Grilled Cypriot cheese, everywhere, always.

Meze

Twenty small plates, a three-hour social dinner.

Frappé

Iced coffee culture at every cafe.

Where to live

Dorm, shared flat or studio: pick one and watch the budget.

Universities own or partner with dorms next to campus; off campus, shared flats in Nicosia are cheap and Limassol is pricier. Air conditioning and a short walk to campus matter more than size.

Where students actually live

  • Engomi, Nicosia

University of Nicosia and European University district.

    €350–500 room

  • Aglantzia, Nicosia

    University of Cyprus campus, quieter.

    €300–450 room

  • Germasogeia, Limassol

    Seafront, expat, pricier.

    €450–650 room

  • Larnaca centre

Beach walkways, airport ten minutes away, cheapest city.

    €300–420 room

Before you pay anyone

  • University housing offices and Bazaraki.com are the main channels
  • One month deposit is standard; get a written contract for your residence permit
  • Check that air conditioning is included and who pays the electricity
  • Nicosia is cheapest for students; Limassol for the seafront

Student life as an international

Small, sunny, social.

Campuses are international by default, weekends are beaches, and Arabic is heard as often as Greek in student cafes. Life is calmer than a big capital, which many parents prefer.

Beach between lectures in Limassol and Larnaca
Large Arab, Lebanese, Egyptian and Jordanian communities
Cheap flights to Athens, Cairo, Beirut, Dubai
Small classes where professors know your name
Work
20 hours a week in term in specific sectors, full time in holidays, after the first six months.
Healthcare
Private student insurance is required for the residence permit, from about €170 a year; the public GESY system covers residents with a job.
Safety
One of the safest countries in Europe.
