The honest take
What we tell our own families about United Kingdom.
Why students love it
What to plan for
Getting around
Leave the car at home.
You will not need a car. Every student city runs on buses and trains, and the 16–25 Railcard cuts a third off rail fares nationwide.
Bus
Most cities cap single fares; unlimited student passes are common.
£2 single · £50–70 / month
Tube & rail
London Underground uses contactless with daily caps. Intercity trains are pricey without a Railcard.
£2.80–3.80 per ride · Railcard £30 / yr
Cycling
Bike-share in most cities; second-hand bikes from £80.
Free–£40 / month
Food & groceries
What a week of eating really costs.
Supermarket cooking is cheap; eating out is not. Lidl and Aldi are your friends, and the £3 meal deal is a national institution.
Full English breakfast
Eggs, beans, toast and sausage; the weekend ritual.
Fish and chips
Friday dinner by the sea or from the corner chippy.
Chicken tikka masala
Britain's true national dish, best in Manchester's Curry Mile.
Sunday roast
Pub lunch with roast potatoes and gravy; halal versions exist everywhere.

Where to live
Dorm, shared flat or studio: pick one and watch the budget.
First year, take the university hall: it comes with bills, Wi-Fi and instant friends. Second year, a shared house with the same people costs about half.
Where students actually live
Fallowfield, Manchester
The student district: cheap, loud, ten minutes to campus.
£110–150 / wk
Headingley, Leeds
Terraced houses, cafes, Otley Run pub crawl.
£100–140 / wk
Stratford, London
Olympic Park, fast trains, better value than Zone 1.
£220–300 / wk
West End, Glasgow
Leafy, near the university, best cafes in the city.
£120–170 / wk
Before you pay anyone
- Never pay a deposit before seeing a tenancy agreement; deposits must be protected by law
- Rightmove, SpareRoom and the university's own portal are the safe channels
- A UK guarantor is often requested; the university or a guarantor service can stand in
- Council tax exemption letter: download it from your student portal in week one
Student life as an international
Societies are the secret.
Every university has hundreds, from Egyptian societies to hiking clubs, and they are where international students find their people in the first month.
- Work
- 20 hours a week in term, full time in holidays, on a Student visa. Minimum wage around £11.50 an hour.
- Healthcare
- Immigration Health Surcharge (about £776 a year) gives full NHS access. Register with a GP in your first week.
- Safety
- Student cities are safe; the usual big-city sense applies in London at night.
